Case binding
Case binding sews or glues the text block and attaches it to rigid boards covered in cloth, paper or laminate — the construction of a hardback. Print-on-demand hardbacks are usually case-laminate.
A traditional case-bound book is sewn in signatures, giving a block that opens flat and survives decades. Print-on-demand hardbacks are typically a glued block in a case-laminate cover, where the artwork is printed onto the board and sealed, with no jacket. Practically, hardback editions need their own ISBN, their own spine-width calculation and often slightly larger margins than the paperback of the same book.
