Word count to book pages — measured, not estimated

Most words-per-page tables are guesses. These numbers come from actually typesetting manuscripts at each trim size.

Every published words-to-pages table hedges with 'it depends' and then guesses anyway. We did it differently: we typeset real manuscripts of 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 words through Ceeryo's engine at each trim size and counted the pages that came out — running heads, chapter openers, drop caps and correct gutters included. The short version: at the standard 6×9 trim, fiction set in a professional serif runs roughly 400–415 words per page, so a 90,000-word novel lands near 217 pages; shrink to 5×8 and the same book grows to about 314 pages. Interior theme moves the count too — the same 90,000-word manuscript came out 217 pages in Marlowe and 253 in Colette and Vantage, a ~15% swing from typography alone. Your exact count depends on your dialogue density and chapter count, which is why the only precise answer is typesetting your actual file — free to see, before paying anything.

In short

Measured by real typesetting (not estimated): 30,000 words ≈ 74 pages at 6×9, 111 at 5×8. 60,000 words ≈ 145 at 6×9, 219 at 5×8. 90,000 words ≈ 217 at 6×9, 253 at 5.5×8.5, 245 at A5, 291 at 5.25×8, 314 at 5×8. Interior theme shifts counts ±15%. Upload your manuscript to get the exact number for your book.

How many pages is a 90,000-word book?

About 217 pages at the standard 6×9 trim, measured by actually typesetting a 90,000-word manuscript with professional book typography — and about 314 pages at the smaller 5×8 trim, 291 at 5.25×8, 253 at 5.5×8.5, 245 at A5. Theme and dialogue density move these by roughly ±15%, so typeset your own file for the exact count.

Measured data

Why these numbers beat the usual 250-words-per-page rule

The old '250–300 words per page' rule comes from double-spaced manuscript pages, not typeset books. A real book page at 6×9 in a professional serif holds ~400 words; page count also absorbs chapter openers (each starts a fresh recto-style page), front matter, and the trim's line length. Estimating from manuscript pages routinely overshoots printing cost calculations by 40%+.

  • 30k words: 74pp (6×9) · 111pp (5×8)
  • 60k words: 145pp (6×9) · 219pp (5×8)
  • 90k words: 217pp (6×9) · 245pp (A5) · 253pp (5.5×8.5) · 291pp (5.25×8) · 314pp (5×8)
  • Same 90k manuscript across themes: 217–253pp (±15%)

Frequently asked questions

How many pages is 50,000 words?+

Interpolating from our measurements: roughly 120–125 pages at 6×9 and about 185 at 5×8, before front matter. Chapter count matters — more chapters means more part-filled opener pages.

Why do different themes change the page count?+

Typeface metrics, leading and chapter-opener sinks differ per design. Our same 90,000-word test manuscript set 217 pages in Marlowe and 253 in Colette — both correct, different typography.

Does the count include front matter?+

The measurements above are body text with chapter openers. Title page, copyright and dedication typically add 4–8 pages.
