KDP trim sizes, and how to choose one

The trim you pick changes your page count, your printing cost per copy, and how the book reads in the hand.

KDP's most-used paperback trims for text-led books are 5×8, 5.25×8, 5.5×8.5 and 6×9 inches (with A5 common outside the US, and larger trims like 7×10 and 8.5×11 reserved for manuals and workbooks). The choice is not cosmetic: printing cost is per page, and the same 90,000-word manuscript that sets 217 pages at 6×9 grows to 314 pages at 5×8 — we measured it by typesetting the identical file at each size. Genre expectations matter as much: mass-market-feel fiction leans compact (5×8, 5.25×8), trade fiction and memoir sit at 5.5×8.5 and 6×9, and 6×9 is the safe default for a first book. Whatever you choose, KDP requires the interior PDF's page size to match the trim exactly and the gutter to match your final page count — both checked automatically in Ceeryo's preflight.

In short

Common KDP trims for novels and memoirs: 5×8, 5.25×8, 5.5×8.5 and 6×9 inches (A5 outside the US). 6×9 is the default for trade paperbacks; compact trims read as fiction but add pages — a 90,000-word book measured 217 pages at 6×9 vs 314 at 5×8. The interior PDF must match the trim exactly.

What is the best trim size for a KDP paperback?

6×9 inches is the most common and safest choice for novels, memoirs and general non-fiction — cheapest per copy because it holds the most words per page (~217 pages for 90,000 words, measured). Choose 5×8 or 5.25×8 for a classic compact fiction feel (the same book runs ~291–314 pages), and 5.5×8.5 as the middle ground. Match genre shelf-mates when in doubt.

Cost math

Trim choice is a printing-cost decision

KDP's print cost is a fixed fee plus a per-page charge, so the ~97 extra pages between 6×9 and 5×8 for the same 90,000 words is pure per-copy cost — which comes straight out of royalties at a fixed list price. Compact trims are a deliberate aesthetic trade, not a free one.

  • Same 90k manuscript, measured per trim: 6×9 → 217pp · 5.5×8.5 → 253pp · A5 → 245pp · 5.25×8 → 291pp · 5×8 → 314pp
  • Per-page print charge makes each step real money per copy
  • Interior PDF page size must equal the trim exactly — the classic rejection
  • Gutter minimum rises with page count (0.375" → 0.875")

Frequently asked questions

Which trim sizes does KDP support?+

KDP supports a range from 5×8 up to 8.5×11 inches. For text-led books the common choices are 5×8, 5.25×8, 5.5×8.5 and 6×9; check KDP's print options page for the full current list, and note some sizes limit page-count ranges.

Can I change trim after publishing?+

You can upload a new interior at a different trim, but it requires a new print setup and your cover must be resized to match the new spine width — the page count changes, so the spine does too.

Is A5 available on KDP?+

Yes — A5 (148×210mm) is supported and popular for non-US markets. Our 90,000-word test manuscript set 245 pages at A5.
