Folio

In book design, the folio is the printed page number. A 'drop folio' sits at the foot of the page — the convention for chapter openers even when other pages carry numbers in the running head.

Folio placement is part of a theme's design system: centered at the foot in classic literary settings, or in the top outside corners in modern layouts. Front matter is traditionally unnumbered (or roman-numbered in long front matter), with arabic numbering beginning at the first chapter.
