Perfect binding
Perfect binding glues the trimmed page edges into a wrap-around cover, producing the standard flat-spined paperback. It is what every print-on-demand paperback uses.
The text block's spine edge is ground off, roughened, and glued into the cover, which is why perfect-bound books do not lie flat and why the gutter has to grow with page count. It is cheap, fast and needs no minimum run, which is precisely what makes print-on-demand possible. Its limits are durability under heavy use and a practical page-count floor of around 24–32 pages, below which there is not enough spine to glue.
