Point size
Point size is the nominal size of type, measured in points of 1/72 inch. Book body text is usually 10–12 pt, but two faces at the same point size can look noticeably different in size.
The number describes the metal body the type once sat on, not the letters, so it is a specification rather than a measurement of what you see. What you actually perceive is the x-height — the height of a lowercase x — which varies widely between faces. A 10 pt face with a large x-height can read larger than an 11 pt face with a small one, which is why choosing size by number alone produces books that feel wrong.
